Quick Hits: Peacemaker, 1883, The Gilded Age, Law & Order

I wanted to do full length pieces on Peacemaker (HBO Max), 1883 (Paramount+), The Gilded Age (HBO Max) and my rewatch of Law & Order but I didn’t want to wait and have you miss out on these great shows.

Peacemaker

Sure it’s a superhero show and what isn’t and this isn’t the time or place for that debate. I’m into all the hero stuff, but Peacemaker is anti-hero, so maybe it will appeal to a wider audience. All the money is on the screen in this first season of a series from writer/director/EP James Gunn that began its storyline in his recently released ‘Suicide Squad’ (also on HBO Max). The show has a ton of heart, great casting and character development and as is the case with a James Gunn product – an outstanding soundtrack.

peacemaker or pissmaker? who cares its funny as hell. #eagly

1883

Also on the spinoff trail is a prequel series to the wildly popular yet still under-the-radar ‘Yellowstone’ (don’t worry, its winning all the awards this year). 1883 tells the story of the wagon trains and trails and tribulations of an expanding American frontier. Sam Elliott leads the way on a breakout cast including the married duo of Tim McGraw and Faith Hill and relative newcomer Isabel May. At times, the story becomes burdensome where you are left thinking “how much worse can it get?” but there are enough small triumphs to keep you from thinking the worst is around the corner. It’s a grown-up western drama and we haven’t had enough of those in recent times on the small screen.

1883 is dark and the poster wants you to know that

The Gilded Age

I have just seen the one premiere episode of this new series from our old friend Julian Fellowes (created Downton Abbey and as the memorable Kilwillie on Monarch of the Glen) and it has good bones. The cast is all-star led by tv veterans Christine Baranski, Carrie Coon and Cynthia Nixon so all is well on that angle. There are some hints of Downton from the perspective of the ‘Upstairs, Downstairs’ of it all – servants and those they serve as well as ‘Bridgerton’ with regards to new society vs old society. Newcomer Louisa Jacobson shows real promise as the curious niece Marian Brook. If Fellowes can keep it fun and light I think it has a chance.

Law & Order (rewatch)

This isn’t a review of Season 21 of L&O as much as it is public notification that I have been rewatching the original run of Law & Order. I’m in season 10 now and the reason I’m doing this is two-fold. First, there is so little compelling 1-hour non-serialized drama on these days and second, and most importantly, the flavor of a series changes when you can watch all the episodes in sequence without delay between seasons. I did a rewatch of ‘The Sopranos’ in December 2020 and it came off as a completely different show. Law & Order is coming back to NBC in about a month and I’ve been pleasantly pleased with general storyline flow and cast changes from season to season. No clunkers so far.

Media Week In Review: January 3-9, 2022

Still working on the title, but the intention is in the right place. Short of daily updates (which i encourage you to find on our Twitter account), weekly summaries seem best for now.

Monday was solid…

I want to reflect a bit on the Yellowstone season 4 finale from the night before. I enjoy the show but its not for everybody and certainly I don’t think for casual tv viewers. It gets rough and most folks who check into network shows probably aren’t ready for Yellowstone. As for Monday, big day as I watched Licorice Pizza which was pretty good. The characters and story were well-formed, the song selection was right for the era and I’ll show my So Cal bias a bit – the locations and attitudes of folks from this area, industry people, was spot on. I really enjoyed the movie. For the rest of the day I watched more episodes of Law & Order. I’m rewatching the entire 20-season run of Law & Order – I won’t finish by the time season 21 premieres in February – but I’m making a good effort. This watch/rewatch is borne out of my feelings that tv and movie content as a whole are qualitatively subpar lately. I’m into season 8 and there hasn’t been a single clunker. I capped the night watch Star Trek: Enterprise’s series premiere. I had remembered bits of it but was confusing with a ST movie so I wanted to reconfirm it in my mind.

The Rest of the Week Wasn’t Spectacular…

Tuesday I had to work so besides my usual morning episode of CNBC’s Halftime Report, I was only able to catch the newest episode of FBI after I got home.

Wednesday morning I managed to see the 2nd episode of The Book of Boba Fett. The series premiere was so sloggy I didn’t feel the need to stay up all night for the midnight premiere of #2 but the 2nd chapter was pretty incredible and I’m back on board with this show.

Thursday I was able to burn through the 3-episode One Chicago shows, thanks to Hulu and not having to skip over commercials, you can get through 3 hours of content is just over 2 hours of actual time. My work event got canceled so I used the time wisely – finishing up season 7 of Law & Order.

Is Carey Lowell single? Just curious.

Friday saw more Law & Order and some YouTube content. Getting the no-commercials plan on YouTube is a low-key way of having a very productive streaming experience.

Saturday I didn’t watch much besides football and of course whatever I watch at my day job.

Sunday I managed to catch up with Seal Team (which might be nearing its end, the profanity being on Paramount Plus has gone up 1000% but this latest episode was sort of a bottle episode). Also on P+ was the 4th episode of 1883 which you have to love if you’re even slightly interested in Yellowstone. There’s something about Sam Elliott telling you he’s gonna burn down your wagon unless you leave the piano behind. Apparently it makes the wagon too heavy for a river crossing. Who knew?

Ok that’s this past week.

What I Saw In 2021: 39 Movie Quick Reviews

I saw 39 movies in 2021. Not very many and to be honest this number doesn’t include rewatches of Classics. Still though, far off my recent high of 85 in 2013. I’ll try harder for 2022, but for now a blurb on each movie I saw last year (full list here).

January thru June

St. Elmo’s Fire: Liked it for the nostalgia of the time.

Annie Hall: Liked it. Love Diane Keaton, always have (except for The Godfathers which we can discuss later).

The Midnight Sky: Really enjoyed this – even considering it’s a Netflix movie and most of those are trash.

Locked Down: You can’t fault Chiwetel Ejiofor or Anne Hathaway for making the best of a tired concept.

Midnight Cowboy: So edgy. I guess you’re here for the performances which are first rate.

Nomadland: I liked it and of course it was Best Picture. I liked how it told stories we’d not seen before.

The Sure Thing: A Classic. Low key Christmas Movie. One of my Top 100 which I will release someday.

Promising Young Woman: Newish story idea, great writing and performances.

News of the World: A bright spot in Tom Hanks’ recent era which has seen some clunkers.

The Trial of the Chicago 7: I don’t usually like Aaron Sorkin penned productions but this one was mildly refreshing.

Palm Springs: Don’t ask me why but I watched this, got sidetracked and finished it like a week later. It’s really good!

Zack Snyder’s Justice League: I watched it cause I felt like I had to. That’s the review.

Kid 90: Lived amongst these times and I saw a lot of recognizable characters. Its a documentary right?

Made You Look – A True Story About Fake Art: I try and mix in a healthy amount of docs each year.

A-Bombs Over Nevada: This was a strange run I was on of documentaries.

Godzilla vs Kong: Barf. So many wrong things. Please don’t make any more of these for a long time.

Banksy and the Rise of Outlaw Art: Pretty good. Great would be actually hearing from Banksy.

Without Remorse: Someone needs to reboot the Tom Clancy-verse. This isn’t horrible but I wouldn’t watch it again.

Infinite: Definitely the best Antoine Fuqua directed Paramount+ movie of the year. It was watchably good!

F9 – The Fast Saga: At this point we’re just consuming movies about cars. Remember gas powered cars?

July thru December

The Tomorrow War: Love any time travel concept and this one was solid. They won’t make more but they should.

Black Widow: Might be my least favorite MCU movie. Probably need to rewatch it a dozen more times though.

How It Ends: I could be LA-snippy about this one but I’m good with one Covid allegory film for 2021.

Jungle Cruise: Audiences loved it I just wish I did. I’m having a real problem believing in The Rock as a movie star.

Woodstock 99 – Peace Love and Rage: I remember the time period and why I don’t attend festivals in upstate NY.

The Suicide Squad: Definitely the SportsCenter of comic book movies. All highlights. Need to rewatch.

No Time To Die: It was a touch long but it hit all the right fan service notes. Needs 500% more Ana de Armas.

The Many Saints of Newark: This movie was awful and if you loved The Sopranos please don’t watch this movie.

Shang-Chi & The Legend of the Ten Rings: My favorite Marvel movie of the past few years. Feel energized after every watch and I can’t say that about a lot of pictures.

Free Guy: This was a fun one even though I didn’t get 30% of the video game references. Very rewatchable.

Enormous – The Gorge Story: Didn’t care for it, but I saw it with some good friends and that’s all that counts.

Dune: I had to rewatch the first 10 minutes a few times but by the end I wanted at least 2 more Dune movies.

Eternals: Its a masterpiece for sure and I’ll rewatch it but its not on streaming or vod yet – wait is this 2019?

Venom – Let There Be Carnage: This movie is trash. I guess I don’t get the Venom attraction.

House of Gucci: It was entertaining, until I dozed off halfway through and didn’t have the energy to wind back and see what I missed.

Love Actually: I guess I try and watch one Christmas movie each year I haven’t seen. I identified most with the Prime Minister of England. So there’s that.

Spider-Man – No Way Home: 1) It’s really good, 2) TH Spidey is growing up, 3) But its a bit corny, 4) But thats ok, 5) So we’ll see won’t we?

The Matrix – Resurrections: The 1st Act was great, the 2nd Act wasn’t and the 3rd Act I thought was cut short maybe and I’d like to see an Extended Director’s Cut cause I think there’s some story missing.

Don’t Look Up: This movie is so much fun but also so dark. So, so dark. But fun also.
